How Can the Indian Government Tackle Drones Warfare Threats?
Over the past years, India has witnessed an increase in the use of drone technology for several military and civilian purposes. The use of drones in the defense sector has proven its worth and has contributed enormously to protecting and preventing future attacks but, drone technology also poses serious threats to public security and personal privacy. Defense technology analysts warn that as unmanned aerial systems (UAS) become cost-effective, easier to manage, and adaptable to crime, terrorism, and threats, defense forces and the governments will face extensive problems to handle these threats. Identifying the newly launched drone technologies and intercepting potential threats and targets will become crucial.
Recently, on Sunday, the Indian Armed Forces in Jammu and Kashmir faced an aerial drone attack by a Pakistan-based terror group. Both Jammu and Kashmir Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) are conducting thorough investigations on this incidence.
There were twin explosions at the Air Force base camp in Jammu, which led to two Air Force personnel’s being severely injured. The first explosion took place at around 1:40 a.m, and the second one just six minutes after that. Just days after the attack on the Jammu base, army personnel’s spotted and fired two other drones found hovering over the Kaluchak military station.
These repeated drone attacks on India need immediate attention from the government. The defense chiefs, in consultation with the government and tech security experts, need to formulate strong security strategies that will protect the country from future attacks through drones.
What Precautionary Measures can India take to Prevent such Attacks in the Future?
Certain characteristics, like low speed, small size, low radar cross-section (RCS), make drones difficult to detect. Governments and military forces around the world, including India, face the same problem and have formulated several preventive measures to prevent and protect from future drone attacks.
One of the most important ways to tackle drone attacks is through detecting and tracking UAS systems. Several countries have installed a counter-UAS system. Using this traditional method, the security personnel’s can track the electromagnetic waves from the drones and detect its size and speed. These systems can employ algorithms that can also detect low-flying drones to other small objects.
Visual cameras can also be used for detecting UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). The electro-optical (EO) systems can detect and trace its path using a camera that will trace its cues and isolate a UAV. Primarily, neural networks were incapable of tracing UAVs. These systems could accurately detect drones from birds. But currently, several countries are undertaking training procedures for the newly revamped neural networks technology to get accurate results to detect a UAV.
Also, one of the most used techniques integrated by several governments is to use combined sensors. Implementing multiple, commercially available counter-UAV systems that at the same time enhances the chances to successfully provide robust detection capabilities.
Drone technology will keep maturing. All the national leaders need to keep themselves updated with the latest technologies to prevent loss of life and injuries.
